Ever since childhood, I have always enjoyed drinking masala buttermilk which my Grand Mom and Mom used to make for us. This was considered a family remedy for colds and aids in digestion. Enjoy ! ~ Kamakshi

Serves : 4
INGREDIENTS
- 4 cups buttermilk or 1 cup Plain Yogurt mixed with 3 cups of water
- 1 tsp crushed garlic
- 1 tsp Panch Phoran ( Five Spice Mix)
- 1 tbsp Chickpea powder (Besan)
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric
- 1 pinch Asafoetida (Hing)
- 1/2 tsp Chilli Powder
- 3-4 curry leaves (optional)
- 1 tsp Oil
- Salt to taste
METHOD
- In a mixing bowl, mix together buttermilk, besan, turmeric and chilli powder.
- Heat oil in big pan, add the crushed garlic and fry for a few mins till it becomes light brown. Add the Five spice (Panch Phoran), Asafoetida and curry leaves.
- Pour the buttermilk mix into the spices and boil for 3-5 mins. Add salt to taste.
- Serve in mugs.
NOTE : In Summers, another tasty variation is cold masala butter milk. It is a refreshing drink and absolutely zero calories, so it is a tasty alternative to sodas and sweet drinks.
COLD BUTTER MILK
INGREDIENTS
- 1/2 cup yogurt
- 4 glasses chilled water
- 1/4 cup of chopped coriander (cilantro)
- 1/4 cup of mint leaves
- 1 green chilly
- 1 tsp roasted cumin seed powder
- 2 tsp Black Salt
- Salt to taste
METHOD
- Put all the ingredients in a blender till coriander and mint leaves crush very well. Serve cold.
